EICR remedial work is the electrical work needed to turn an unsatisfactory report into a satisfactory one. That means fixing every item coded C1 (danger present) or C2 (potentially dangerous), and investigating any FI (further investigation). C3 items are recommendations. You don't have to fix them to pass, but they are often worth doing at the same time.
We quote a fixed price for remedial work with every EICR we carry out. We will also quote from a report issued by another company: send it over and we will price the work. You are under no obligation to use us.
Common remedial items
Most failed reports come down to a handful of common issues, especially in older Nottinghamshire housing such as Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and ex-council homes:
| Finding | Typical code | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| No RCD protection on socket or bathroom circuits | C2 | RCD protection, often via a new consumer unit |
| Old consumer unit or rewirable fuse box | C2/C3 | Consumer unit replacement (notified under Part P) |
| Lighting circuit with no earth and metal fittings | C2 | Replace fittings with plastic, or run a new earth / rewire |
| Missing main bonding to gas or water | C2 | Install main protective bonding |
| Damaged sockets, switches or exposed live parts | C1/C2 | Replace accessories |
| Loose connections or signs of overheating | C1/C2 | Remake connections, replace damaged parts |
| Circuit that couldn't be identified or tested | FI | Trace and test, then record the result |
Consumer unit upgrades
An old fuse box or a plastic consumer unit without RCD protection on every circuit is one of the most common reasons for a C2. Replacing it with a modern unit is often the single biggest fix on a report. It is notifiable building work, and as a Part P notified business we handle the notification and give you the certificate.
The 28-day deadline for landlords
Under the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020, landlords must complete remedial work within 28 days of the inspection, or sooner if the report says so. They must then get written confirmation from a qualified person and give it to the tenant, and to the council if it asks, within 28 days of completing the work. Because our quote arrives with the report, most landlords can approve the work in a single reply.
After the work: confirmation, not a new EICR
You don't normally need a whole new EICR once the remedial work is done. You need written confirmation that the work has been carried out and the installation now meets the standard, plus the certificate for the work itself (a Minor Works Certificate or an Electrical Installation Certificate, depending on the job). We issue both. Your original EICR keeps its five-year date. See do I need another EICR after remedial work?.
How much does EICR remedial work cost?
It depends entirely on what the report found. Replacing a couple of damaged sockets is a small job, and a consumer unit replacement or partial rewire is a bigger one. We price each item on the report individually, so you can see what each fix costs, and the price we quote is the price you pay.
