Quick answer
No, there's no single public online register of EICRs in England. Unlike Energy Performance Certificates, which you can look up by postcode, EICRs aren't lodged centrally. To check one, you need a copy of the report from the landlord, seller or owner, and then you verify the details on it.
How to check an EICR is genuine
- Get the full report, not a summary page. A genuine EICR includes schedules of inspection and test results for every circuit.
- Check the inspector's organisation. Competent person schemes such as NAPIT and NICEIC have online searches for registered businesses. Check the company on the report appears there, at the address shown.
- Contact the company. A legitimate firm will confirm it issued the report, for that address, on that date.
- Check the dates and outcome. The next inspection date must still be in the future, and the outcome should be satisfactory, or come with written confirmation of the remedial work.
- Look for warning signs: identical or rounded test results, far fewer circuits than the consumer unit has, or no inspector name or signature.
Our full checklist for a valid EICR walks through each section of the report.
What about notifiable work?
Notifiable electrical work, such as a new consumer unit or circuit, is registered with building control through a competent person scheme. The homeowner receives a building regulations compliance certificate, and that registration can sometimes be checked. But that's for installation work, not for EICRs.
